How a Yakima Roof Rack System Works
Every Yakima roof rack has four parts. Towers are the feet that sit on your roof. A fit kit (Yakima calls them clips, landing pads or kits, depending on the tower) shapes each tower to your specific vehicle. It’s usually sold separately, and the Fit Guide tells you which one you need. Crossbars run side to side between the towers. SKS lock cores (“Same Key System”) let one key lock the towers and your Yakima carriers.

Yakima SkyLine FX: for Fixed Points or Tracks
SkyLine mounts to the hidden factory fixing points (often under small covers in the roof trim) or to factory tracks. That gives a clean, low look and a very solid mount. This listing is size SM, and the right size depends on your vehicle’s fixed-point spacing.

Three limits apply at once: the rack (towers and bars), each carrier, and your vehicle’s roof. The lowest of the three is your real limit. You’ll find the roof limit in your owner’s manual, usually as a “dynamic” (moving) load.
- Dynamic load is what you can carry while driving. It’s the number that matters on the road.
- Static load is for a parked vehicle, such as people in a rooftop tent. It’s higher, but it only counts when you’re stopped.
- Add the weight of the rack and the box itself to your cargo. A heavy box can use up a big share of a small roof limit before you’ve packed anything.
