How to Choose a Rooftop Cargo Box
1. Check your crossbars first
A hard shell box mounts to crossbars, not directly to roof rails. If you don’t have bars yet, see our roof rack crossbars guide or roof racks for a bare roof. Then check that the box’s clamps fit your bar shape and width, and that your bar spacing is inside the box’s listed range. Our guide on how roof boxes fit to roof bars covers the clamps.
2. Work out the weight limit
Check three limits separately: rack + carrier + cargo must stay under your vehicle’s dynamic (driving) roof limit; the load on the bars and towers must stay under the rack system’s limit; and the cargo must stay under the box’s own limit. More on that in roof rack weight capacity explained.
3. Capacity and length
Bigger isn’t always better: a longer box carries skis but is more likely to reach the rear hatch, and a taller one adds height for garages. Pick the size your trips need and measure before buying.
4. Opening side and lock
Dual-side opening lets you load from the curb on either side. A rear-opening box is loaded from behind the car. Security features vary: check separately whether the lid locks and whether the mounts lock the box to the bars. The SportRack and Yakima listings say they lock the box to the rack.
5. Hard shell or soft bag
