How Strong Should a Tow Strap Be?
Look at the minimum breaking strength in the listing. A common rule of thumb for recovery is a strap rated around 2-3 times the stuck vehicle’s weight, because a vehicle stuck in mud takes much more force to free than it weighs. Your shackles and recovery points need to be rated for the job too. The weakest link sets your real limit.

Tow Strap Safety
- Use rated recovery points only. Never use a hitch ball, tie-down loops, bumpers or suspension parts.
- No hooks for snatch recovery. Use loop-end straps with shackles.
- Keep people well back. Stay at least the length of the strap away from the line during a pull.
- Use a damper over the strap or winch line.
- Inspect straps for cuts, fraying and sun damage before every use, and replace damaged ones.
