How to Read a Come Along Rating
Many come alongs with three hooks include a pulley block. They’re often rated at their highest number with the cable doubled back through that pulley (a double-line pull), and a lower number with a single line. The capacity in a listing title may be the double-line figure. Check the instructions for the single-line rating before a heavy pull.
- Single line: faster and longer reach, but a lower rating.
- Double line (pulley): about double the pulling force, but half the reach per stroke.
- Short cable: most steel-cable come alongs have roughly 10-12 ft of cable. Plan an anchor point close enough, or add a strap.

Come Along Safety
- Never exceed the rated capacity, and use the single-line rating unless you’re rigged with the pulley.
- Don’t extend the handle with a pipe. If it’s hard to pump, the load is too heavy.
- Use a tree-saver strap around trees, and rated shackles and straps everywhere else.
- Keep people out of the line of the cable, and lay a heavy jacket or blanket over the cable mid-span to dampen it if something lets go.
- Wear gloves. Steel cable develops sharp broken strands.

Match the rating to the job, with margin, and check the single-line rating. A stuck vehicle takes much more force than its weight on flat ground, especially in mud.
Can a come along pull a truck out of mud?
It can help with a light vehicle or a small pull, but it’s slow and has a short reach. For regular recovery, a mounted electric winch is the better tool.
What does “3 hook” mean on a come along?
The third hook is usually on a pulley block, so you can rig a double line for more pulling force.
Is steel cable or synthetic rope better?
