The best truck bed winch mount depends on where the winch has to pull from and how big the winch is. This guide covers the main ways to mount a winch on a pickup (a receiver hitch mount, a mounting plate bolted to a solid base, or a portable anchor plate for a small utility winch), how to check the bolt pattern and ratings, how to install one safely, and five winch mounts that were in stock on Amazon US when we checked. We haven’t tested them hands-on; the details come from each Amazon listing.

Quick answer: no drilling and a 2 in receiver: a receiver hitch winch mount (the DACK for 10 x 4.5 in recovery winches, the MaxxHaul for small ATV/UTV-size winches). A permanent mount on a structure built for winching: the RHINOVAL mounting plate. A folding cradle for 8,000 to 13,000 lb winches: the ECOTRIC. A small WARN utility winch you move around: the WARN 70770 portable anchor plate.

Ways to Mount a Winch on a Truck

  • Receiver hitch winch mount. A plate or cradle on a 2 in shank that slides into your hitch receiver and is held by a hitch pin. If you already have a compatible receiver, it normally goes in without drilling, and you can take it off when you don’t need it. Confirm the receiver’s suitability, clearance and approval for winching loads, front or rear.
  • Winch mounting plate on a solid base. A flat steel plate or cradle that you bolt to a structure engineered or approved for the winching load and pull direction. An ordinary cargo bed rack or bare bed floor may not qualify. Good for a winch that stays in place, for example to pull equipment up ramps into the bed; after loading, secure the equipment with separate tie-downs, never with the winch rope.
  • Portable anchor plate. A plate for a small utility winch, with chains that hook it to an anchor point. You move it to where you need it.

If you only need an occasional pull without electrics, a hand winch may be enough; see our come-along winch guide.

Before You Buy: Bolt Pattern, Ratings and Mounting Base

Match the Bolt Pattern

The DACK, RHINOVAL and ECOTRIC mounts below list a 10 x 4.5 in pattern; smaller ATV/UTV and utility winches may use other patterns. A winch’s rating doesn’t tell you its fit, so check your exact winch’s mounting dimensions and clearance in its manual against the pattern the mount lists.

Check Every Rating in the Chain

WARN’s basic guide to winching gives a simple rule: take the gross weight of what you plan to pull, multiply it by 1.5, and don’t exceed the rating of your winch or winch rope. The mount, the hitch receiver, the hitch pin and the anchor all need to handle that pull too. A mount listed for 15,000 lb doesn’t make a hitch or a bed floor any stronger.

Choose a Solid Base

A pickup bed floor is thin sheet metal, and a cargo bed rack is built for cargo, not necessarily for winching. A mounting plate needs a structure engineered or approved for the winching load and pull direction, so follow the winch and mount makers’ instructions. If you drill, check what’s under the bed first, such as the fuel tank, fuel lines, brake lines and wiring.

5 Truck Winch Mounts by Type

DACK Winch Hitch Cradle Mount (Receiver Hitch, Large Winches)

A cradle for a 2 in receiver with a 10 x 4.5 in winch pattern and a 10 in fairlead pattern. The listing says the load plate is 5 mm cold-rolled steel with a powder coat, lists a 15,000 lb capacity, and includes a hitch pin and clip. That is the mount’s advertised capacity; check your winch fits it, and your hitch’s own rating still applies.

Best for: a recovery winch you want to move between the front and rear receivers, or take off when not in use. Skip it if: your truck has no 2 in receiver, or your winch doesn’t use a 10 x 4.5 in pattern.

MaxxHaul Universal Hitch Winch Mount (Receiver Hitch, Small Winches)

A steel winch mount for a 2 in receiver, listed for ATVs, UTVs and trucks with a 3,600 lb capacity. It suits the smaller winches used for loading and utility pulls rather than full-size truck recovery winches. The listing text doesn’t give the mounting-hole dimensions, so get them from MaxxHaul’s instructions or the maker before you buy.

Best for: a small winch for loading equipment or pulling from the rear receiver. Skip it if: your winch is rated above 3,600 lb.

  • Universal mount system
  • Item Package Dimension: 13.0L x 6.0W x 2.6H inches
  • Item Package Weight – 5.5 Pounds

RHINOVAL Universal Winch Mounting Plate (Fixed Base)

A steel mounting plate for winches up to 15,000 lb with a standard 10 x 4.5 in bolt pattern. The listing says the raised bolt pattern means you only drill the four plate-to-base holes, not the winch holes. It includes an integrated fairlead flange and hardware, and measures 23.6 x 8.2 in at 5 mm thick. The listing notes it is not a direct bolt-on for Jeeps.

Best for: a permanent winch on a structure engineered or approved for the winching load. Skip it if: you don’t want to drill, or you have no base strong enough for the pull.

ECOTRIC Cradle Winch Mount (Folding, 8,000 to 13,000 lb)

A folding cradle for 10 x 4.5 in winches rated 8,000 to 13,000 lb, with over 1,500 Amazon ratings at the time of writing. The listing says it is made of 1/5 in steel with a powder coat, installs as a bolt-on (drilling may be required), and includes fasteners. The winch is not included.

Best for: a folding cradle for a 10 x 4.5 in winch rated 8,000 to 13,000 lb. Confirm how it attaches to your truck and what extra hardware you need. Skip it if: your winch is outside that range or uses another pattern.

  • Fitment: The winch hitch mount is suitable for 10″ x 4-1/2″ standard winch, rated 8000 lbs to 13000 lbs

WARN 70770 Portable Anchor Plate (Utility Winches)

A powder-coated steel plate from WARN for its 1700DC, 3700DC and 4700DC utility winches. The listing says it is pre-drilled and has two anchor chains with clevis-style slip hooks, so the winch can be moved and anchored to a variety of objects. Check the winch’s manual for the loads it is rated for, and make sure the anchor can take the pull.

Best for: a WARN utility winch you use in different spots. Skip it if: you have a different winch, or need a permanent recovery mount.

  • High quality, black powder coated steel portable anchor plate
  • Comes with pre-drilled bolt patterns
  • Equipped with two anchor chains with clevis-style slip hooks

How to Mount a Winch in a Truck Bed

  1. Decide what the winch will pull. Work out the gross weight and apply WARN’s 1.5x rule, then pick a winch and mount rated for it.
  2. Pick the mounting point. A compatible receiver hitch, or a structure engineered or approved for the winching load and direction, following the winch and mount makers’ instructions.
  3. Check under the bed before drilling. Look for the fuel tank, fuel lines, brake lines and wiring.
  4. Bolt the winch to the mount. Use the grade of bolts and torque the winch maker specifies, and fit the fairlead.
  5. Plan the wiring. Follow the winch manual for cable size, connections and any circuit protection it specifies. Keep cables away from heat, sharp edges, moving parts and pinch points, and insulate exposed terminals.
  6. Inspect before use. Complete and inspect the installation as the makers’ instructions say, keep everyone clear of the rope and load when you operate it, and recheck the bolts after the first few uses. A light test pull doesn’t prove the mount’s load capacity.

Black Friday Tip and Gift Idea

Black Friday tip: if you plan to buy a winch or winch mount on Black Friday 2026 (November 27) or Cyber Monday (November 30), note your winch’s bolt pattern and rating, and your hitch receiver size, now. Then shortlist mounts that list both. Check the current price on Amazon on the day rather than a “was” price.

Gift idea: a receiver hitch winch mount is a practical gift for someone who already owns a winch, but only if it matches their winch’s bolt pattern and their receiver size.

FAQ

Can you mount a winch in a truck bed?

Yes, but the bed floor is thin sheet metal, so don’t bolt a winch plate straight to it and rely on that alone. Mount it only to a structure that is engineered or approved for the winching load and pull direction, as the winch and mount makers’ instructions specify; an ordinary cargo bed rack may not qualify. Many owners use a receiver hitch winch mount instead, which slides into an existing compatible receiver without drilling.

What is the standard winch bolt pattern?

There isn’t one for every winch. The ECOTRIC, DACK and RHINOVAL mounts on this page list a 10 x 4.5 in pattern, which many larger recovery winches use, but capacity alone doesn’t tell you the fit. Check your exact winch’s mounting dimensions and clearance in its manual before you buy a mount.

How strong does a winch mount need to be?

Your setup is only as strong as its weakest rated part: the winch, the mount, the hitch receiver, the pin and the anchor. WARN’s guide says to take the gross weight you plan to pull, multiply it by 1.5, and not exceed the rating of your winch or winch rope. Check that the mount and hitch are rated for that pull too.

Is a receiver hitch winch mount safe?

It can be, if every part is rated for the pull. Use the pin and retaining clip specified for the mount and receiver, pull as straight as you can, and ask your hitch maker whether the receiver is rated for winching loads, not just towing. The listing ratings on hitch mounts are for the mount; they don’t raise your hitch’s rating.

Can I use a truck bed winch to lift things?

No. WARN’s guide says never to use a winch as a hoist or to suspend a load, and never to use one to lift or move people. For lifting into a truck bed, use equipment rated for lifting, such as a hoist built for the job.
