Thule Roof Rack Fit Guide: Find the Right Bars, Feet & Kit for Your Car

Thule makes some of the best roof racks in the world, but ordering the wrong one is surprisingly easy. The same WingBar Evo bar that fits your neighbor’s Outback perfectly will sit useless in your garage if your car has a bare roof and you bought the raised-rail kit. This guide walks you through exactly how Thule fit works, so you order the right combination the first time.

The 3 Parts of Every Thule Roof Rack

Thule racks are modular. A complete setup always has three components, and all three must match your specific vehicle:

  • Bars — the crossbars themselves (WingBar Evo, SquareBar Evo, ProBar Evo). These come in lengths from 108 cm to 220 cm.
  • Foot pack — the towers that hold the bars. The foot pack is chosen by your roof type, not your car model.
  • Fit kit — small brackets and pads that adapt the foot pack to your exact make, model, and year. This is the part people most often get wrong.

Step 1: Identify Your Roof Type

Raised side rails — rails you can wrap your hand around, with a gap underneath. Common on SUVs and wagons (Subaru Outback, many Toyotas). Use the Thule Evo Raised Rail foot pack — no fit kit needed in most cases.

Flush rails — rails that sit tight against the roof with no gap. Common on newer SUVs (RAV4, CX-5, many European models). Use Evo Flush Rail with a model-specific fit kit.

Bare roof — no rails at all. The foot pack clamps into the door jambs. Use Evo Clamp with a model-specific fit kit.

Fixed points — capped mounting holes in the roof, common on vans and some European cars. Use Evo Fixpoint with a fit kit.

Step 2: Match the Bar Length

Thule publishes the recommended bar length per vehicle, but the rule of thumb: compact cars take 108–118 cm, mid-size SUVs 127–135 cm, full-size trucks and vans 150 cm and up. When in doubt, go with the length Thule’s own fit lookup recommends — bars that are too long create wind noise and look wrong; too short and your foot spacing suffers.

Step 3: Verify With Thule’s Fit Lookup, Then Buy

Before ordering anything, run your exact year/make/model through Thule’s Fit Guide on their site. Write down the three part numbers (bar, foot, kit). Then compare prices — Amazon frequently sells the same Thule components below list price:

  • Set of 4 load carrier feet for Thule Evo roof rack system (load bars sold separately)
  • Foot installs easily onto vehicles with raised railings
  • Ergonomic torque limiter key indicates when the rack is safely and properly secured to your vehicle
  • Unisex Adult Cycling Bike Accessories
  • Brand Black Hard Material THULE
  • Bicycle accessories 7107 Jgo. Evo Fixpoint Feet Black

Common Fit Mistakes to Avoid

  • Buying by photo. Flush rails and raised rails look similar in pictures but take completely different foot packs.
  • Ignoring the year. A 2018 and 2020 model of the same car can use different fit kits after a redesign.
  • Mixing generations. Older Thule Rapid System feet don’t pair with Evo-series bars without adapters.
  • Forgetting locks. Thule One-Key lock cylinders are sold separately — budget for them if you park outside.

FAQ

Do Thule racks fit any car? Nearly — Thule publishes fits for thousands of vehicles. But each fit is specific: there is no universal Thule rack.

Can I install a Thule rack myself? Yes. Clamp-style installs take 20–30 minutes with no tools beyond the included torque key. Our guide on removing roof racks covers the reverse process.

Are Thule bars worth it over budget crossbars? For occasional light loads, budget bars do the job — see our roof rack and crossbar guide. For daily use, heavy gear, or resale value, Thule’s fit precision and locking system justify the price.
