How to Check a Used Topper Fits Your Truck
Caps are built for specific bed dimensions, so a cap that “looks about right” can leak, rattle or sit badly. Before you buy:
- Measure your bed length. Line-X’s bed measuring guide (written for bed covers) says to measure from the inside of the bulkhead to the inside of the tailgate. Use these as first checks, not proof of fit.
- Measure the width at the tailgate and again at the middle of the bed. Line-X says to use the larger number for a bed cover; for a cap, keep both numbers and check the fit at each point. Measure twice and write the numbers down.
- Compare the cap’s base with your bed rails along its full length, front to back. Ask the seller which truck, years and bed length the cap came off, and confirm the fit for your truck with the cap maker or a cap dealer.
- Check your bed rails. Line-X notes that extra-wide rails, stake pockets and rail caps change how a cover fits and may need adjustments or extra clamps. Bedliners can matter too.
- Check the cab line. For a cab-high cap, measure from the bed rail to the top of your cab and look at how the cap’s front lines up with the cab and rear window.
- Inspect the cap: cracks in the shell, the windows and their seals, the rear door lock and latches, the third brake light if it has one, and the rubber seal on the base.

Pick one seal, not both, and don’t stack seals unless the cap maker says to. Use the seal profile the cap maker specifies if you can find it, and check that the length covers the cap’s full base.
How to Mount a Used Topper
- Get the cap maker’s instructions first: ask the seller for the brand and model, and find the approved clamps, clamp positions and tightening specs. If you can’t, have a cap dealer or installer mount it.
- Remove the old seal, clean the cap base and the bed rails, and fit the new seal.
- Use enough people, or lifting equipment, for the cap’s size and weight to set it on the bed, then center it side to side and front to back.
- Fit the clamps along both sides where the cap maker says, and tighten them to its spec.
- If the cap has a third brake light, connect it with the harness made for your truck, secure the wiring away from sharp edges, then check the brake lights and both turn signals separately. Use an installer if you’re unsure.
- Check the rear door closes over the tailgate and both lock.
