Roof rails run front to back along your roof; crossbars run side to side across it; and a “roof rack” usually means the whole carrying system, crossbars plus the towers or feet that hold them. Rails are the attachment points, crossbars are what you load, and baskets, boxes and bike or kayak carriers mount on the crossbars. Below: a side-by-side comparison, how to tell which rails you have, load limits, and four parts that were in stock on Amazon US (ZIP 10001) when we checked. Specs come from the makers and listings; we haven’t tested these hands-on.
Quick answer: if your car has roof rails, you still need crossbars to carry most gear. Raised rails (with a gap underneath) take clamp-on bars; flush rails need towers made for them; for a bare roof, the rack maker’s fit guide shows an approved clamp-style or fixed-point system (see our roof rack without rails guide). Add a basket only if you carry bulky, odd-shaped gear.

What Are Roof Rails?
Roof rails are the strips that run front to back along the edges of the roof on many SUVs, wagons and crossovers. They come in two main types:
- Raised rails: stand off the roof with a gap you can fit your fingers under. Universal crossbars clamp around them.
- Flush (low-profile) rails: sit tight against the roof with no gap. They need towers or feet made for flush rails, often with a vehicle-specific fit kit.
On their own, rails are attachment points: you add crossbars to carry a load. Your owner’s manual says what your rails are rated for.
What Are Crossbars?
Crossbars run side to side across the roof and are what carriers attach to. Common shapes are square, round and aero (wing-shaped) bars; many aero bars have a T-slot on top for carrier mounts. Some cars come with factory crossbars, and some factory rails have crossbars that fold or stow into the rails.
What Is a Roof Rack?
“Roof rack” usually means the whole system: crossbars plus whatever holds them to the car. That can be clamps on raised rails, towers on flush rails, clips in the door openings on a bare roof, or feet on factory fixed points. People also use “roof rack” for a cargo basket or platform, which mounts on top of crossbars.
Which Do You Need?
- Look at your roof. Raised rails, flush rails, fixed points or a bare roof?
- If you have rails, add crossbars made for that rail type (or check whether your car already has stowed crossbars).
- If you have a bare roof, use the rack maker’s fit guide to find an approved system for your exact car: a clamp-style rack with a fit kit, or a fixed-point system if your car has mounting points.
- Pick the carrier for your sport (bike, kayak, ski, box or basket) and check it fits your bars’ shape and width.
- Check the load limits below before you buy the carrier.
Load Limits: Count the Rack Too
Start with your car’s roof limit and subtract the rack and carriers, then also stay within the rack’s and each carrier’s own limits. Yakima’s crossbar weight limits page says the vehicle’s dynamic limit in its fit guide is the maximum combined weight of the rack system and the load, and gives this example:
| Item | Weight |
|---|---|
| Vehicle limit (example) | 165 lb |
| BaseLine towers (set of 4) | 5.2 lb |
| Small CoreBar pair | 9 lb |
| 2 FrontLoader bike carriers | 26 lb |
| Remaining allowance under the example vehicle limit | 124.8 lb |
That remaining allowance isn’t what the two bike carriers can hold: each carrier’s own and per-bike limits still apply. Yakima also notes that the static limit (parked) can be higher than the dynamic (driving) limit, so check which one a number refers to. Also keep loads off the roof that are loose, too wide, or block your lights or plate.
Aerodynamics and Noise
Anything on the roof adds drag and some wind noise, and a loaded basket or box adds more than bare bars. Aero bars are shaped to cut drag and noise compared with plain square or round bars. Take bars or baskets off when you don’t need them; see how a roof rack affects fuel economy and how to make roof racks quieter.

Black Friday Tip and Gift Idea
Black Friday tip: work out your roof type (raised rails, flush rails or bare roof) and your rail spacing before deals start, then shortlist bars made for it. On the day, check each deal is for the same size and fit, and compare the current price.
Gift idea: a cargo basket suits someone who already has crossbars and carries camping gear; for someone without bars, a gift card is safer, since bars must match their roof.
FAQ
What’s the difference between roof rails and crossbars?
Roof rails run front to back along the sides of the roof, and on most cars they’re fitted at the factory. Crossbars run side to side across the roof, between the rails or between towers, and they are what bike, kayak, ski and cargo carriers mount on. Rails alone usually can’t carry a load; you add crossbars to them.
Is a roof rack the same as crossbars?
Mostly, yes. “Roof rack” usually means the whole system that carries the load: crossbars plus the towers, feet or clamps that hold them to your car. Some people also call a cargo basket or platform a roof rack, which mounts on top of crossbars.
Can I carry things on roof rails without crossbars?
Generally no. Rails give the crossbars something to attach to; carriers, boxes and baskets are made to mount on crossbars. Check your owner’s manual for what your car’s rails are rated for and how they should be used.
Which crossbars fit my roof rails?
It depends on the rail type. Raised rails have a gap under them, and universal raised-rail bars clamp around them if the spacing and rail shape match the listing. Flush rails sit tight to the roof and need towers made for flush rails, such as the Yakima SightLine. Use the maker’s fit guide for your car.
How much weight can I put on my roof rack?
Start with your car’s dynamic (driving) roof limit and subtract the weight of the rack and carriers. Yakima’s support page gives an example: a 165 lb vehicle limit minus 40.2 lb of towers, bars and two bike carriers leaves 124.8 lb. Then stay within the rack’s and each carrier’s own limits too, as each maker defines them.
Is a cargo basket better than just crossbars?
A basket makes bulky or odd-shaped gear easier to strap down, but it adds weight and drag and uses up part of your load limit. Plain crossbars with a dedicated bike, kayak or ski carrier are often the better choice for that one sport.
