How to Choose a Trailer Tool Box
Measure the Tongue
Measure the length of flat tongue you have in front of the trailer body, the angle of the A-frame, and the clearance around the tongue jack, coupler and safety chains. The box must not block the jack handle or hit the tow vehicle in a tight turn.
Poly, Aluminum or Steel?
- Poly (plastic): won’t rust or dent permanently and is light. It’s great for straps and gear, but less theft-resistant.
- Aluminum: light and corrosion-resistant, with the classic tread-plate look. It dents more easily than steel.
- Steel: the toughest and most secure, but heaviest. Keep the paint or powder coat intact to stop rust.
Add Up the Weight
Whatever goes on the tongue adds to your tongue weight. A loaded box, especially with a battery or generator, can push a small trailer’s tongue weight up noticeably. Check your hitch and tow vehicle ratings.

What size trailer tongue box do I need?
Measure the flat length of your tongue ahead of the trailer body, the A-frame angle, and the clearance around the jack and coupler. Pick a box that fits without blocking any of them.
Is a poly or aluminum trailer tool box better?
Poly is light, rust-proof and cheap. Aluminum is also light but more secure, and it has the classic look. Steel is the most secure but heaviest.
