Heavy e-bikes need a hitch rack built for their weight, their wide tires and the effort of loading them. This guide shows the specs that matter, then compares seven 2-inch hitch racks using only what their Amazon listings state.

Quick answer: pick a platform hitch rack whose per-bike limit is above your heaviest e-bike, that fits your receiver size, tire width and wheelbase, and that ideally comes with a ramp. Then check that the rack plus the bikes stays under your hitch’s and your vehicle’s tongue weight capacity.

How to Choose an E-Bike Hitch Rack

REI’s e-bike rack guide recommends hitch racks for e-bikes because they load close to the ground, and notes that many e-bikes weigh 50 pounds or more. Platform racks, which hold the bike by its wheels in trays, handle most frame styles, including step-throughs. Check these specs before you buy:

  • Maximum weight per bike. It should be greater than the weight of any bike you carry. A total capacity alone (for example 160 lb for two bikes) doesn’t tell you the per-bike limit.
  • Tongue weight capacity. The rack plus the bikes can’t exceed your hitch’s tongue weight capacity or your vehicle’s, whichever is lower. Heavy racks count: the Young Electric 2-bike rack below weighs 66 lb on its own, according to its listing.
  • Tire width and wheelbase. Compare your bike’s tire width and wheelbase with the rack’s maximums.
  • Ramp. A ramp lets you roll the bike up instead of lifting it. Some racks include one, and some sell it separately.
  • Fenders. REI warns that a wheel hook clamping over the tire may not hold a bike with fenders correctly. Look for a rack that clamps the frame or says it is fender compatible.
  • Receiver size. Six of the racks below list a 2-inch receiver; the Young Electric listing doesn’t state its receiver size, so confirm it before ordering.

Loading Tips for Heavy E-Bikes

  • Remove the battery if your bike allows it and the bike manual says so. REI notes it makes loading easier and can bring a slightly heavy bike within the per-bike limit.
  • No ramp? Lift the front wheel into the tray first, then lift the rear wheel in as you roll the front forward.
  • Heavier bike inside. The IRON DEER listing says to place the heavier e-bike in the inner position and face the two bikes in opposite directions.
  • Don’t leave it unattended. REI warns that a determined thief can defeat a cable lock. Take the bike inside overnight and consider a heavier chain lock.

Black Friday Tip and Gift Idea

Black Friday tip: if you plan to buy an e-bike hitch rack on Black Friday 2026 (November 27) or Cyber Monday (November 30), weigh your bikes and look up your hitch’s and vehicle’s tongue weight capacity now. Then shortlist only racks whose per-bike limit, tire width and wheelbase fit. On the day, check the current price on Amazon rather than a “was” price.

Gift idea: a hitch rack only works as a gift if you know the recipient’s receiver size, bike weight and wheelbase. If you don’t, a gift card is the safer pick.

FAQ

What should I look for in an e-bike hitch rack?

Start with the maximum weight per bike: REI says it should be greater than the weight of any bike you carry. Then check that the rack fits your receiver size, your bike’s tire width and wheelbase, and whether it comes with a ramp.

Can a 2-inch hitch carry two e-bikes?

Only if the numbers add up. REI explains that the rack plus the bikes can’t exceed your hitch’s tongue weight capacity or your vehicle’s, whichever is lower. Add up the rack weight and both bikes, then check both ratings. Also confirm each bike is within the rack’s per-bike limit, tire width and wheelbase.

Does an e-bike hitch rack fit fat tires?

Many do, but check the listing. The racks above list tire widths up to 5 inches (the RockyMounts GigaWatt lists up to 4.5-inch fat tires). Also check the wheelbase: the stated maximums are 48, 50 and 55 inches, while TANX lists bikes up to 59 inches long and some listings give no limit.

Should I remove the e-bike battery before loading?

If your bike allows it and the bike manual says so, yes. REI notes that removing the battery makes loading easier, can bring a slightly heavy bike within the per-bike limit, keeps the battery warmer inside the car and makes the bike less tempting to thieves.

Do I need a ramp for an e-bike rack?

Not strictly, but REI calls a ramp especially important if you struggle to lift a heavy e-bike. Without one, lift the front wheel into the tray first, then the rear wheel.

Can I use an e-bike hitch rack on an RV or trailer?

Check the listing for your exact vehicle type. The Young listings say RV approved and the RockyMounts listing says RV and fifth-wheel rated with limitations, but RV approval doesn’t mean trailer approval. Meanwhile the IRON DEER Eco Pro listing says it is not recommended on trailers, RVs, fifth wheels or any towed vehicle.
